![]() ![]() ![]() When a freak technological failure halts all traffic to and from Gora, three strangers-all different species with different aims-are thrown together at the Five-Hop. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through. At the Five-Hop One-Stop, long-haul spacers can stretch their legs (if they have legs, that is), and get fuel, transit permits, and assorted supplies. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. ![]() With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. What I Liked About the Book It might be a coincidence, but I also watched the Netflix series “Downton Abbey” at the same time, and in both, a housemaid named Ethel ends up sleeping with someone with a higher social status. It explores the lives of English Earls, their coal miners and housemaids, their friends in politics and high society in other countries, and the toll WWI takes on friends whose countries go to war against each other. The book is the first book in Ken Follet’s Century trilogy. ![]() In most cases, it turns out to be a disappointment when you read a book with high hopes that’s why I usually try not to read a book with expectations, but I’m glad to say that this book met most of my expectations. I’m not sure how well I’d handle any of these separately. Some are fairly obvious: recent multiple losses of a personal and professional nature, health concerns that I can forget only until the next time I take a breath (or get my O2 hose stepped on, usually by me), and the looming practical concerns of preparing for a move downstairs while also prepping for some major needed home renovations. But let’s just say that I see the compounding effect of a variety of things getting in the way of my creativity. I’m not going to discuss them all in detail here, because they’re between me and my shrink and God. But this is orders of magnitude beyond any creative block I’ve previously experienced. The Texan guy, thinking that Austin is taking a crap, decides to pitch in and give encouragement to someone who is obviously struggling. He hears Austin Powers grunting as he fights the guy, saying, "Who does Number 2 work for?" Kind of like that scene out of Austin Powers where Austin's in the bathroom stall with a bad guy and a big Texan man is in the next stall and can only see Austin's feet. Ender’s Shadow even made it on the New York Times’ famed hardcover bestseller list. Cynics like me are usually quick to see the lucrative possibilities of such a novel and hindsight proves us right: the built-in name recognition automatically attracted attention and virtually ensured best-selling numbers. ![]() This makes 1999’s Ender’s Shadow fascinating for all sorts of reasons: Billed as a “parallax novel”, it follows more or less the events of Card’s classic Ender’s Game, but from the perspective of another character rather than Ender Wiggins himself. The glory days of Ender’s Game and Speaker of the Dead are long past, and Card’s latest work doesn’t seem to appeal to the largely left-wing secular SF constituency. Look on the web (better yet, search for “Orson Scott Card” and any of these keywords) and you will find a deep and widely-shared assessment that, at the very least, Card doesn’t write novels like he used to. ![]() Over the past few years, it has become acceptable in some Science Fiction circles to deride Orson Scott Card as, to put it bluntly, a homophobic pro-Bush religious nut who -as a side cheap shot- doesn’t write anything worth reading anymore. ![]() |
